Austral Pass

The Austral Pass covers Rurutu and Tubuai, the two Austral Islands with regular Air Tahiti service. Both islands must be visited. Rurutu is famous for humpback whale swims (roughly July to October) and limestone caves; Tubuai has a wide, quiet lagoon and few visitors.

Replaces: Australes Pass. Air Tahiti renamed its passes for travel from 1 April 2026; see old and new pass names.

Who the Austral Pass suits

Whale-season travellers and anyone looking for French Polynesia without the crowds. To add the Australs to another pass, use the Austral extension (from €474).

Flight schedules decide which order works best on your dates. We check live availability before you commit, because a pass can't be changed once it's issued.

How the pass works

• Validity: up to 28 days from your first flight (40 days if you add a Marquesas, Austral or Rarotonga extension).
• Closed loop: the circuit starts and ends in Tahiti (or Papeete). If Moorea is on your route it must be at the very start or end, and Tahiti–Moorea flights must be direct.
• One visit per island: each island can be visited once, with one stopover of more than 24 hours. You don't have to use every island in the pass, but you must visit at least two.
• No Tahiti transits mid-pass: you can't stop back in Tahiti during the circuit, except for up to 24 hours between a pass and an extension.
• One archipelago at a time: finish all the islands in one archipelago before moving to the next; within an archipelago the order is up to you, subject to the flight schedule.
• Book carefully: every flight must be confirmed when the ticket is issued, and once a pass is paid and issued it can't be changed or refunded.
